Less active, less fit people have a 30 percent to 50 percent greater risk of developing high blood pressure.

Although no direct link exists between regular exercise and stroke, it is known that exercise reduces the risk of other health problems, such as heart disease, which can contribute to stroke.

Facts about sedentary lifestyles
Thousands of people die each year because of a lack of regular physical activity. According to the Surgeon General’s report, more than 60 percent of adults do not get the recommended amount of exercise.
The report also states that:

  • One-third of adults are not physically active at all.
  • Inactivity increases with age.
  • Women are more likely to lead sedentary lifestyles than men.
  • Physical activity— especially among females—declines rapidly with age, beginning during adolescence.

Getting started
It is important to understand that not all types of exercise offer the same benefits for your heart, and not everyone will enjoy the same exercises.

Walking, swimming and cycling are good beginning activities. Remember, choose an activity you enjoy, listen to your body and start slowly.

Stop exercising if you have any of the following symptoms

  • Chest pain, chest pressure, aching or discomfort
  • Pain in the neck, jaw, teeth, back or arms
  • Severe shortness of breath or trouble breathing
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Excessive fatigue

If you get these symptoms, stop and rest. If they do not go away, you might need to take Nitroglycerin as prescribed and notify your doctor.

Strategies for exercise success

  • Be patient! It takes time to get your strength back after surgery.
  • Chose a regular time of day to exercise when you are rested.
  • Find an activity you enjoy.
  • Exercise with a friend or loved one.
  • Wear comfortable clothing.
  • Warm up and cool down before and after exercise.
  • Set realistic goals and celebrate accomplishments.
  • Listen to your body and rest as indicated.
  • Stick with it!
