Volunteer job descriptions

We have a variety of services, from emergency department to way-finding.

Finding your niche should be easy — see our list below. Some volunteers love organizing, so they do paperwork while others serve coffee and deliver flowers. Some help with medical charts and records. Others transport patients or help visitors find their way — or a place to park.

We also have certified pet therapy folks who love to bring their dogs (and cats!) to visit patients, if requested.

We even have pianists who take advantage of our lovely Bösendorfer grand piano in the main lobby. Nothing is insignificant. Even just visiting with a patient confined to a bed — or sitting with someone so they don’t pass away alone — is a tremendous gift you can give.

Do any of these areas appeal to you?

  • Certified pet therapy
  • Data entry/typing on a computer
  • Emergency room help (much walking)
  • General office work
  • Mended Hearts services (for survivors)
  • Patient wheelchair transport
  • Reading to patients
  • Restocking supply shelves
  • Sharing your cancer recovery experience (peer navigator)
  • Visiting with patients and families
  • Way-finding and greeting (much walking)
  • Wheeling patients to discharge areas
  • Working our “coffee carts”

Once you’ve joined our team, you’ll learn what’s expected for your service during the training. For now, it’s important to understand that each service area comes with the following expectations that reflect Salem Health’s values:

Excellence: Committed to the highest quality in all that we do.
Caring: Sensitive, kind and compassionate in all of our interactions.
Integrity: Honest and ethical in all that we say and do.
Accountability: Personally responsible for our work and for the results.
Teamwork: Individuals and groups collaborating to benefit those we serve.
