Frequently Asked Questions

Does my insurance cover gastric bypass surgery?

Although many insurance companies cover gastric bypass surgery some do not.

Please contact your insurance provider to inquire if gastric bypass is a covered benefit, and what preoperative requirements exist.

How long will I be in the hospital?
Most people are in the hospital three nights, depending on the particular procedure. This time frame also varies from patient to patient.

How long will I follow-up with my surgeon after surgery?

Unless otherwise indicated, your visits, with both the surgeon and dietitian, will be at 1 week, 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 1-year, 18-months and 2 years following your surgery.

After your 2-year check up, you will have a yearly visit with your surgeon and dietitian, for a total of 5 years after your surgery.

You will be advised to follow up with your Primary Care Physician for any medical issues not related to your surgery.

When can I exercise after surgery?

Patients are instructed to begin an exercise program prior to their surgery. You will have a preoperative appointment with our exercise specialist to help design an appropriate program.

Following surgery, patients will begin walking within hours and will be encouraged to increase their daily exercise as tolerated. Daily exercise will increase weight loss.

Patients are advised to do no strenuous exercise or heavy lifting (over 15 pounds) until cleared by their surgeon (usually 6 weeks after surgery).

How soon will I be able to return to work?

Most people can go back to work two to three weeks following their surgery if their job does not require lifting or pulling.

Some patients require a longer recovery period, up to six weeks to return to regular duty. This time off is the best time to practice the recommended dietary regimen before returning to everyday activities.
