Morbid Obesity The National Institutes of Health (NIH) defined persons with "Morbid Obesity" as those whose body mass index (BMI) is greater than or equal to 40. This is roughly equal to 100 pounds over the ideal body weight for a man and 80 pounds over the ideal body weight for a woman. A BMI of 35 – 40 is also considered "morbidly obese" if it is associated with other illnesses caused by obesity, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and sleep apnea, to name just a few.
