Magnetic Resonance Imaging
(MRI) Open & Standard
The MRI uses
a special imaging technique to image internal structures of the body,
particularly the soft tissues. These scans may be used for detecting
some cancers or
for following their progress.
Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan
An imaging technology that locates
tumors more precisely and generates an image of a tumor’s location,
size and shape. CTs are often used for detecting and staging (evaluating
the severity) of cancer.
A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scanner
The PET scan uses a small
dose of a chemical called radionuclide combined with a sugar to detect
possible cancer or evaluate if the cancer has spread.
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
The use of ultrasound to guide a biopsy
needle to obtain a sample of tissue for analysis by a pathologist.
Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy
A new procedure used in early stage breast
cancer to assist in the detection of the first or “sentinel” lymph
node (or nodes) that would be at the highest risk of tumor spread.
Pathology and Cytology
The Salem Hospital Regional Laboratory performs
a comprehensive array of diagnostic testing.
