Rhythm disturbances (electrophysiology)

Electrophysiological studies examine the conduction or electrical system of the heart.  The electrical system regulates the heart’s rhythm.

The normal heart beats between 60-100 times per minute, at rest throughout our lives.  In the majority of people, the heart rhythm stays regular and increases in response to our body’s needs.

However, in some people, the heartbeat may become irregular and/or beat too fast or too slow, this is called an arrhythmia.

An electrophysiology study examines the conduction system of the heart to:
  Diagnose an abnormal heart rhythm
Determine the possible cause of lightheadedness or fainting
Identify people at risk for a life-threatening irregular rhythm
Determine if a pacemaker or other implanted device is necessary pacemaker insertion, implantable cardioverter defibrillator
determine if medical treatment is effective

In 2002, Salem Hospital launched its comprehensive electrophsyiology program.  The program has grown under the direction of our cardiologists and electrophysiology specialists:

Common atrial arrhythmias
  Sinus arrhythmia
  Sinus tachycardia
  Sick sinus syndrome
Premature supraventricular contractions or premature atrial contractions (PAC)
Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), paroxysmal atrial tachycardia (PAT)
  Atrial flutter
  Atrial fibrillation

Common ventricular arrhythmias
  Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs)
  Ventricular tachycardia (VT)
  Ventricular fibrillation (VF)
