This department provides the equipment and facilities so that board-certified Radiation Oncologists can prescribe recommended radiation treatment for patients who, after evaluation, have indications for radiation as a part of their treatment plan.
Scope of Patient Care
The Radiation Oncology Department sees patients who have been referred by other physicians in the area such as surgeons, internists and general practitioners.
Department Duties
- Provide an evaluation, which includes taking a history and doing a physical examination as well as reviewing pertinent x-rays, laboratory, pathology reports and other data.
- Possibly refer the patient to another physician and/or Radiation Oncology Department for additional care and/or evaluation.
- Provide treatment training.
- Provide Simulation procedures.
- Generate computer isodose curves to help determine how most effectively to treat the proper area.
- Take verification films with the linear accelerator to document the treatment area.
- Provide radiation therapy.
- While being treated, the patient is seen each week by the physician to review the chart, the patient's progress and to address patient and family questions and concerns.
- Provide a nursing assessment with the patient regarding nutrition, pain management, skin care, or any other precautions as directed by the physician.
- Provide patient follow-up evaluation.
