Shadow Expectations

All shadow students are held to the following expectations during their time at the hospital:

  1. Arrive 10 minutes early to Volunteer Services to complete the application process on the first day you come to shadow
  2. Participants shall always come dressed appropriately, according to the outlined dress code on the Dress and Participation Standards form in the Form Packet
  3. Bring any forms or materials from your school or program, if applicable
  4. Bring hospital evaluation forms to each shadow
  5. Bring questions to discuss with the healthcare professionals you shadow with
  6. Do not carry a cell phone or other personal electronic device during your shadows as they are disruptive to medical equipment
  7. At no time will you perform direct patient care (clinical skills)
  8. Use proper infection control procedures and perform hand hygiene while in the hospital
  9. It is due to our staff and patients that you have this opportunity to shadow – give them the respect they deserve
  10. Ask questions at appropriate times during your shadows
  11. The staff person you shadow with is your supervisor while you are at the hospital – report to them in all cases
  12. Patients have the right to not have an observer in their room – respect this right and stay flexible if a patient is uncomfortable having you observe with them
  13. Always respect and maintain patient confidentiality, both during your shadow and after you leave the hospital
  14. Contact the Volunteer Services office at 503-561-5277 prior to your scheduled time if you are not able to attend any of your shadows

Volunteer Services staff are here to support you through this process. Do not hesitate to ask questions if you are unsure of any part of your practicum/internship experience at Salem Hospital or West Valley Hospital.
