Student Volunteer Expectations

All Student Volunteers are held to the following expectations:

  1. Participants shall always come dressed appropriately, according to the outlined dress code on the Dress and Participation Standards form in the Form Packet and including hospital ID and uniform
  2. When in a patient’s room, always introduce yourself and make sure all necessary items are within the patient’s reach
  3. Before leaving a patient’s room, ask the patient if there is anything else you can do for them, and then follow up if a request is made
  4. Use proper infection control procedures and perform hand hygiene while in the hospital
  5. Do not carry a cell phone or other personal electronic device as they are disruptive to medical equipment
  6. At no time will you perform direct patient care (clinical skills)
  7. Always respect and maintain patient confidentiality, both during your volunteer service and after you leave the hospital
  8. Contact the Volunteer Services office at 503-561-5277 prior to your scheduled time if you are not able to attend any of your experiences

Volunteer Services staff are here to support you through this process. Do not hesitate to ask questions if you are unsure of any part of your student volunteer experience at Salem Hospital or West Valley Hospital.
