Nuclear medicine Nuclear medicine is highly specialized, non-invasive imaging in which a patient receives a radioactive agent either intravenously or by mouth. This material allows a physician to see the function of a patient’s body rather than the anatomy, and is typically gone from the system with in 24 hours. Nuclear medicine scans are helpful in diagnosis and treatment of multiple diseases including, but not limited to arterial/venous blockages, infections, fractures, tumors, and gastrointestinal function. Salem Hospital has three nuclear medicine gamma cameras that perform all of these exams. Location and Hours Our normal operating hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. A Nuclear Medicine technologist is available on emergency callback during non-scheduled hours.
