Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy
Patient Information

The exam

During the exam, you will lie on your back or rest on your side against a wedge shaped sponge pillow.

The sonographer is the technologist who will assist with your exam. She will perform a baseline sonogram (ultrasound image) to identify the area of interest in your breast.

Once the exact area of concern in your breast is located, our radiologist will numb the skin of your breast with a local anesthetic, using a small needle.

The radiologist will then place a sampling biopsy device into the skin and guide the device directly into the area of concern.

The sonographer will provide a live image on the monitor to assure accurate placement of the biopsy device. As samples are taken, you may hear a click from the specially designed biopsy instrument; between five to ten tissue samples may be obtained.

The exam takes approximately one hour.
