| Red Top And Gold Top Tubes |
| |
Used for most chemistry tests. Contain
no anticoagulant. Gold top “Serum separator” tubes contain a special
barrier to separate cells from serum when the specimen is centrifuged. |
| Lavender Top Tubes |
| |
Most commonly used for Hematology tests. Contains
EDTA anticoagulant. Gently invert tube immediately after the phlebotomy to
ensure blood, anticoagulant mixing. |
| Blue Top Tubes |
| |
Used for coagulation studies. Contains sodium citrate
anticoagulant. Gently invert tube immediately after filling to ensure blood,
anticoagulant mixing.
Blue top tubes must be full (to the full extent of the
vacuum) to insure proper blood-anticoagulant dilution ratio. If blood is drawn
in a syringe, insert the needle through the tube’s cork and allow the
tube to fill to capacity. |
| Green Top Tubes |
| |
Used for a variety of testing. Contain lithium heparin
anticoagulant. Gently mix by inversion after filling tubes with blood. |
