Fund Provides Resources for
Cancer Patients
Clara Graham knew that living with cancer was not an easy task for anyone, but it was especially diffi cult for people trying to survive on a fi xed income.
She wanted to help.
Thanks to a generous gift from her estate to the Salem Hospital Foundation, when she died, the Clara Graham Endowment Fund was established to assist cancer patients needing financial help.
Cancer patients receiving care at Salem Hospital sum up this worthwhile program best:
"This is just a note to say thank you for the check I received last week. I really appreciate your consideration. This will be such a big help to me in paying my bills."
"The help that you've given has been put to good use. I now have lights and food. The stress has been lifted off, and I feel such relief and peace. Now I feel my energy being able to fight to stay in remission."
During the past 13 years, 296 cancer patients have shared $75,000 in financial assistance from the Clara Graham Endowment Fund. One-time gifts averaging $250 are given to patients needing things like:
- Pain medication
- Equipment rental
- Food
- Temporary housing
- Transportation
Need is evaluated by hospital staff involved in caring for cancer patients.
"This special resource has made an immediate and often crucial difference in providing stability for low-income cancer patients in our community," says Joan Stembridge, R.N., M.S., Salem Hospital counselor. "We are fortunate to have had Clara Graham in our community."
