Best in cardiac surgery!
Salem Hospital has been ranked
number one in Oregon for Cardiac
Surgery, among the top 5
percent in the nation for
Cardiac Surgery, and a
recipient of the 2007
HealthGrades
Cardiac Surgery
Excellence
Award™,
according to a
comprehensive
study released
by HealthGrades,
the nation’s leading healthcare
ratings company.
HealthGrades provides ratings and profiles of hospitals, nursing homes and physicians to consumers, corporations, health plans and hospitals.
As part of its annual Hospital Quality in America study, HealthGrades independently and objectively rates the quality of care for nearly every hospital in the country, for each of 28 procedures and diagnoses—from bypass surgery to knee replacement to treatment for a heart attack.
“When people need cardiac surgery, they want to know that they will receive quality care. This HealthGrades recognition reaffirms that our patients receive top-quality care at Salem Hospital,” says Norm Gruber, president and CEO of Salem Hospital. “We are very proud of the physicians, nurses, technicians, and all the many employees who work diligently to provide quality care every day, and who made this recognition possible.”

Strengthening patient safety
The first phase of the hospital’s new
automated clinical-information
system, installed in December,
incorporates new technology
designed to provide greater levels of
patient safety. One of the innovations
patients will experience is the use of
electronic bar coding.
Patient-care staff now use handheld scanning devices as they administer medications to patients. The scanner provides a three-point check of the process. It checks the identification of the staff member and matches up information on the patient’s armband with the bar code on the medication to ensure that the patient always receives the proper medication. The use of bar coding also ensures that patients are charged only for the medications they receive.
Salem Hospital is one of the few hospitals in the country using this innovative technology.
Helping save lives
Salem Hospital was recently
recognized with Medals of Honor
from the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services for raising
organ donor rates. Hospitals were
recognized for achieving and
sustaining a donation rate of 75
percent or more of eligible donors.
By contrast, the national average
donation rate in all hospitals was
59 percent.
Making the decision to donate organs is heart wrenching. Donor families are dealing with tragedy and at the same time recognize they have the ability to help another person realize a miracle.
You can help, too! Register as an organ and tissue door at www.donatelifenw.org. Even if you have a code D on your Oregon Driver’s License, you are still encouraged to register online.
