Disaster preparedness
Have you ever thought of what you would do if a winter storm cut off your electricity for days? What if a flood warning were issued near your home?
Floods, severe weather, and storms are common in Oregon this time of year. Disaster can strike quickly and without warning. Knowing what to do in case of an emergency is your best protection. Get ready with these five easy steps:
| |
Meet with household members to discuss the potential dangers of an emergency event and how to respond to them. |
| |
Identify the safest location outside your home. It is wise to plan one meeting place near your home and an alternate meeting place outside your neighborhood in case you cannot return to your home. |
| |
Train all family members to use a fire extinguisher, to administer first-aid and CPR, and to shut off utilities. Teach children how to dial 9-1-1 and how to make long-distance phone calls. Post emergency contact numbers near all telephones. |
| |
Assemble a 72-hour emergency preparedness kit for each family member. Include food, water, clothing, medications, and emergency contact numbers. During winter add gloves, boots or heavy shoes, a blanket or sleeping bag, and a flashlight with extra batteries to each kit. Keep a spare kit in each car. |
| |
Maintain your readiness. Review your disaster preparedness plan with your family at least once a year. Identify what new training, equipment, or supplies you may need. |
