Imagine: The Health Education Center
Every day, Salem Hospital makes a difference in the lives of thousands of people in our community. Many have, at one time or another, walked through our doors to have a baby, visit a loved one, or be treated for an illness.
For 112 years, Salem Hospital has been part of our community. And now, as the hospital moves forward in building for the future, the Foundation has a unique opportunity to make another connection with the community.
To do something special.
To partner with people and help them or their family members learn more about their personal health, wellness and even illness.
We’re embarking on a project that is dedicated to not only meeting people’s needs when they are ill, but also when they’re not.
When they need health information.
When they want state-of-the-art training.
And when they’re looking for a place to gather for support.
We’re creating a new Community Health Education Center—a place that will be “the source” for medically accurate information and educational programs for our community.
The trained health educators available in the Resource Center will help you get started on your quest for health information. Whether you’d like to watch a videotape, borrow a book, or pick up a brochure to take home, chances are you’ll find what you’re looking for in the Center.
But to turn the dream of this Center into a reality, we need your help.
In addition to the Health Resource Center (pictured left), other components will include: Wellness Kitchen, Dr. J.A. King Staff Library and Support Group Room.

Whether you’re recovering from heart surgery, have just been diagnosed with diabetes, or are trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, what you eat makes a big difference. In the new Wellness Kitchen, you’ll learn about nutrition and food preparation tips that can not only help you get healthy, but stay healthy as well. Need to decrease the amount of salt in your diet? Want to cut out a little fat? Or perhaps you’d like some tips on vegetarian cooking. In the Wellness Kitchen, you can learn how from hospital nutritionists and guest chefs.

In the new library, physicians and hospital employees will have access to state-pf-the-art technology, as well as numerous periodicals, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Some of the technology will be used for continuing medical education programs, webcasts, and broadband classes presented by leading medical institutions. The library is named in memory of Dr. James Alan (J.A.) King, an internal medicine specialist who practiced medicine in Salem for many years. He left a significant gift in his estate to the Salem Hospital Foundation when he passed away.

When Susan’s mother was diagnosed with emphysema, she read everything she could find about the condition. But what she really wanted to do was talk with other people who have the disease. She heard about the Better Breathers Support Group that meets at Salem Hospital’s Regional Rehabilitation Center. Support groups play an important role in the healing process through sharing of common experiences. The new support group room will provide a comfortable and confidential living room environment where people can meet and share their experiences.
