Electroencephalograh (EEG)

EEG or electroencephalogram is a test that records electrical brain activity. It is a painless and noninvasive procedure that usually takes 90 minutes.

The EEG can be compared to the ECG (electrocardiogram) which records electrical activity from the heart. EEG data, in comparison, is recorded from the brain. This allows doctors to evaluate brain function.

EEG’s are ordered to help diagnose neurological problems such as seizures, strokes, brain tumors and head injuries.

How is an EEG recorded?

Before the test, a technologist will obtain a thorough history. The patient’s head will be measured and marked so that approximately 25 electrodes can be applied to the scalp.

In most cases, the electrodes are applied with a special tape that is easily removed when the test is finished.

Once the electrodes have been applied, the patient lies on a bed and the test can begin. During the study, the patient may be asked to perform a deep breathing exercise, look at a flashing light or even take a short nap.

When the test has been completed, the patient’s scalp is cleaned.

Preparing for the EEG
Some EEG abnormalities are only seen during light sleep. For this reason, many patients are frequently asked to sleep less on the night prior to their test. It is often requested that patients only sleep between midnight and 4 a.m. the night before their scheduled test.
Patients should continue taking their medication as normal. Please bring a list of all current medications.

Patients should restrict their consumption of caffeine products such as coffee, tea, soda and chocolate prior to their study.

Fasting is not required for an EEG, in fact, eating a meal or a snack prior to the test is advised.
Do not consume alcohol 12 hours before testing.
Do not wear makeup, hair spray, gels or earrings.
Make sure your hair is clean and dry.
Smoking prior to the test will not effect the recording.

Testing Young Children

In order to accurately record an EEG, it is necessary for the patient to minimize their  movements during head measurement and electrode application.

Unfortunately, young children and babies are generally not able to lay still for long periods of time. For this reason, small children usually  need to have their movements restricted. We invite the parents to help with this process.

In addition, the electrodes will frequently need to be applied with a special glue to ensure a good contact throughout the test. The glue that is used does not harm the hair or skin.

When the testing has been completed, the glue is removed with a solvent that also will not harm the hair or skin.

Common Misconceptions

The EEG does not involve shocks, needles or hair cutting. The EEG cannot read a person’s mind. Patients can have their family members in the room during the test. No small children please.

The actual recording lasts approximately 20 minutes. The remaining time is required for the application and clean up of the electrodes and the history taking.

Test Results
A neurologist will interpret the EEG and the results will be made available to your primary care physician within 1-2 days.
