Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that causes a disruption of the normal electrical activity of the brain. The symptoms of a seizure can be subtle or very dramatic.

The EEG (Electroencephalograph) is a sophisticated diagnostic tool that accurately records seizure activity. The Neurodiagnostic Lab at Salem Hospital is dedicated to helping physicians diagnose seizures and other neurological abnormalities.

Incidence of Epilepsy

Epilepsy and seizures affect more than three million Americans of all ages, at an estimated annual cost of $12.5 billion in direct and indirect costs.

Approximately 200,000 new cases of seizures and epilepsy occur each year.
Ten percent of the American population will experience a seizure in their lifetime.
Three percent will develop epilepsy by age 75.
