Diabetes Education

Diabetes Education is offered on an inpatient and outpatient basis to all age levels at Salem Hospital. Inpatient services are available to provide instruction to newly diagnosed patients, or reinforce specific topics or skills.

Outpatient education is available to children and adults with type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes.

The majority of participants choose to attend the four-day class which is offered during day or evening times. All class participants meet individually with the nurse educator to demonstrate skills and with the dietitian to develop an individualized meal plan.

Individual appointments are available for gestational patients, participants receiving insulin pump self-management training or any one else whose schedule or health status precludes attending class.

Follow-up classes are available to patients who have completed the initial training on an annual basis. The program is accredited by the American Diabetic Association (ADA). Cort Garrison, MD is the medical director.
