Cancer care team

When you receive treatment through the Salem Health Cancer Institute, you’ll meet a diverse team of people who all have your health and recovery in mind.

Physicians

Our physicians are committed to providing coordinated oncology care for each patient.

Hematologists are doctors who specialize in blood disorders, such as leukemia and lymphoma.

Medical oncologists are doctors who manage chemical-based treatments like chemotherapy and hormone therapy.

Radiation oncologists are doctors who specialize in treating cancer with radiation, either using external machines or implanted radioactive material.

Gynecologic oncologists specialize in treating cancers of the female reproductive system.

Surgeons specialize in treating cancer with surgery by physically removing as much of the cancer from the body as possible.

Gastroenterologists are doctors who specialize in the digestive system and its disorders.

Pulmonologists are doctors who specialize in diseases and conditions of the chest.

Palliative care providers include physicians and nurse practitioners that offer an extra layer of support for patients with serious illness and their loved ones at any stage of the disease. Learn more about our palliative care program.

Pathologists interpret laboratory tests and evaluating cells, tissues and organs before, during and after your treatment.

Radiologists perform and interpret imaging tests, such as x-rays or ultrasound.

Urologists are doctors who specialize in the surgical and medical diseases of the urinary tract and the male reproductive organs.

Support staff

Cancer nurse navigators are certified oncology nurses with decades of experience. They help you identify needs, solve problems and connect you with the resources you need, from physicians to care organizations and support groups.

Licensed clinical social workers help you and your family with emotional wellness by providing counseling, coping strategies and support.

The professional clinical research team helps you access clinical trials without traveling to a large academic center. Because of our affiliation with OHSU's Knight Cancer Institute, we have access to one of the largest cooperative groups for cancer clinical trials in the country.

Registered dietitians are available for consultations to help combat treatment-related side effects.

Friends and peers

Peer navigators connect with patients to listen, encourage and share their experiences as fellow survivors.

Support groups and education opportunities are offered regularly for patients, caregivers and loved ones.

In-hospital care

The integrated inpatient oncology unit includes an experienced team of oncology certified nurses, medical-surgical certified nurses, and hospice and palliative care staff ready to care for you or your loved one during a hospital stay. Our palliative care program—including a team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains—cares for people when an illness causes pain, symptoms or stress.
