Bariatric surgery - Results

On the average, patients who have had weight loss surgery usually lose 50-75 percent of their excess body weight.   Occasionally patients lose more than 75% of their excess body weight.

Patients begin losing weight immediately and continue to lose weight for 12-18 months after surgery.  By 18 months weight loss has usually slowed considerably.

Some patients experience little or no weight loss.  This is usually caused by failure to comply with diet and exercise recommendations after their surgery.

However, 80% of all patients undergoing weight loss surgery will fall into the 50-75 percent excess body weight loss category.
