Salem Hospital Ranked Number One for Cardiac Surgery for 2007-2009
Salem Hospital ranked No. 1 in Oregon for overall heart services according to the Eleventh Annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study (2009).
The study, the largest of its kind, analyzed 41 million patient records from virtually all of the nation's 5,000 hospitals over the years 2005, 2006 and 2007.
HealthGrades also gave Salem Hospital five-star ratings (better than expected) for specific cardiology services. Specifically, Salem Hospital's top ratings for 2009 are:
Heart services
- HealthGrades Coronary Intervention Excellence Award T (ranked among the top 10 percent nationwide)
- Ranked No. 1 in Oregon for overall cardiac services
- Ranked No. 1 in Oregon for cardiac surgery
- Five-star rated for coronary bypass surgery
- Five-star rated for coronary interventional procedures
- Five-star rated for treatment of heart attack
What does it mean to get a five-star rating?
A five-star rating indicates that the hospital has "better than expected" mortality or complication rates for that particular procedure. In other words, more people survive, and they have fewer complications than expected.
The records are "risk-adjusted," meaning that hospitals that take sicker patients are compared on equal footing with other hospitals. Hospitals' data are updated annually.
The 2008 HealthGrades ratings for all hospitals nationwide are available for free on the organization's award-winning consumer Web site, www.healthgrades.com.
