Preparing for the EEG

Some EEG abnormalities are only seen during light sleep. For this reason, many patients are frequently asked to sleep less on the night prior to their test.

It is often requested that patients only sleep between midnight and 4 a.m. the night before their scheduled test.

Patients should continue taking their medication as normal. Please bring a list of all current medications.

Patients should restrict their consumption of caffeine products such as coffee, tea, soda and chocolate prior to their study.

Fasting is not required for an EEG, in fact, eating a meal or a snack prior to the test is advised.

Do not consume alcohol 12 hours before testing.

Do not wear makeup, hair spray, gels or earrings.

Make sure your hair is clean and dry.

Smoking prior to the test will not effect the recording.
