Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that causes a disruption of the normal electrical activity of the brain. The symptoms of a seizure can be subtle or very dramatic.

The EEG (Electroencephalograph) is a sophisticated diagnostic tool that accurately records seizure activity. The Neurodiagnostic Lab at Salem Hospital is dedicated to helping physicians diagnose seizures and other neurological abnormalities.

Incidence of Epilepsy

  • Epilepsy and seizures affect more than three million Americans of all ages, at an estimated annual cost of $12.5 billion in direct and indirect costs.
  • Approximately 200,000 new cases of seizures and epilepsy occur each year.
  • Ten percent of the American population will experience a seizure in their lifetime.
  • Three percent will develop epilepsy by age 75.
