Introduction

Sleep disorders affect every aspect of your life. Each year the Salem Hospital Sleep Disorders Center treats thousands of patients with various sleep problems, including:

  • Sleep Apnea—obstructed or partially obstructed airway during sleep.
  • Sleepwalking—partial awakening from non-REM sleep with complex movements, including walking.
  • Insomnia—difficulty falling asleep, trouble maintaining sleep or insufficient sleep.
  • Narcolepsy—excessive daytime sleepiness that may cause suddenly and briefly falling asleep.
  • Restless Legs Syndrome—unpleasant limb sensations causing the desire to move limbs.
  • Snoring and Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome—increased respiratory effort with repeated arousals during sleep.

Sleep Apnea is associated with the development of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and depression. Snoring is not just a nuisance those around you, but can be life threatening if it goes untreated.

The reduction in blood oxygen level that occurs during the pauses in breathing can increase the burden on your heart and lungs and lead to significant health issues over time.
