PURPLE Crying

Thanks to generous grants from the Salem Hospital Foundation and the Children's Trust Fund of Oregon Foundation, all families who deliver their babies at Salem Hospital's Family Birth Center receive important information on understanding normal infant crying.

Parents are given a ten minute DVD and booklet to take home to view again and share with family and caregivers.

The Period of PURPLE Crying™ was developed based on years of child development research. You can also go to www.dontshake.org or www.purplecrying.info for more information about the program. All babies cry, some a lot more than others.

  • Your baby may not stop crying no matter how hard you try.
  • Crying can come and go and you won't know why.
  • Healthy crying babies can look like they are in pain, even when they are not.

If you are concerned, please take your baby to a healthcare provider to be assessed.
